Extended Stays for Visiting Academics & Research-Creators

Back to Visiting Academics and Researcher-Creators page

Only under special circumstances will we consider stays of over 120 days and up to a maximum of one year.

Stays of more than 120 days require additional administrative work and costs to McGill, as well as costs to the researcher coming to Canada in the form of work permits, medical exams, etc.

In such cases, CIRMMT members sponsoring visiting academics/researcher-creators from outside Canada must agree to handle the employer compliance fee or any other immigration fees required by the Government of Canada.

For more information on work permits please visit the Canadian Immigration website.

Please note that the process to apply for work permits can take a minimum of 10 weeks once the necessary paperwork has been completed. Therefore, please ensure to allow sufficient time to complete the entire process.

How to apply for an extended stay

The process to apply remains the same as for all visiting academics and research-creators, except that the letter from the sponsoring CIRMMT regular or collaborator member must also include that the funds to pay for a non-Canadian's employer compliance fee will be provided.

Note to CIRMMT regular or collaborator member sponsors from a non-McGill institution in Quebec

Please consider processing your guest through your institution directly to simplify the process. However, please feel free to talk to the CIRMMT administrator about this: jacqueline.bednar [AT] mcgill.ca
