Contextual, situated, relational: Music as an agent of the socio-ecological transition

CIRMMT’s RA2 and RA4 are pleased to announce a workshop on music as an agent of the socio-ecological transition to consider how the current ecological transition compels us to rethink our lifestyles and relationships with non-human beings.

Description

As the current ecological transition compels us to rethink our lifestyles and our relationships with non-human beings, the art world is also undergoing significant transformations in its practices. By breaking with traditional modes of musical representation, artists are opening the field to situational and relational practices, framing musical and sound creation as acts of mediation between places and individuals.

In this setting, diverse artistic forms are emerging or being revitalized. Whether through reaffirming sensitivity to landscapes, fostering public awareness, or critically engaging with public and political spaces, artists and researchers are continuously expanding the realm of possibilities. From sound walking to music composition inspired by ecologies, and from sound installation to community-based actions, artistic practices in times of ecological transition are becoming deeply contextual.

Through encounters, Magali Babin approaches listening as a tool for attention, gathering and openness to otherness. Between the acoustics of natural landscapes, social contexts and sound reminiscence, the artist draws her materials and creates ambiences, installations or listening experiences. In her recent projects, she is interested in the public sound space and collective listening in relation to living spaces. Her work has been presented in the form of concerts and performances at international festivals in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe. The artist's sound installations have been included in solo and group exhibitions at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (Triennale Québécoise. 2011. Mtl), La Fabrique (2015. Fr.), Mois Multi (2012/2019.Qc.). Magali has just submitted a thesis in Études et pratiques des arts at UQAM, and her research-creation is entitled: Sonoquête, laboratoire de recherche sur les empreintes sonores : une pratique de l'écoute en contexte et en relation.
