Description
Data-driven approaches to music are becoming increasingly common, touching on diverse areas that include music creation, production, discovery, consumption, archiving, retrieval and more. It is also relevant to numerous research domains, such as MIR, musicology, analysis, neuroscience, etc. Although models trained using machine learning are playing an increasingly important role, data-driven approaches are by no means limited to AI-oriented work. Along with their many benefits, data-driven approaches also raise concerns with respect to environmental costs, intellectual property rights, privacy, the creation of problematic incentives for artists, algorithmic bias, an excessive focus on Western popular music and more.
This workshop will explore these types of themes, and will consist of a series of presentations, to be followed with a panel discussion led by Dr. Emilia Gómez (who will also present a CIRMMT distinguished lecture on March 17). The workshop will be followed by a brief meeting of CIRMMT Research Axis 2 members to discuss future priorities and plans.
Anyone who wishes to attend this workshop is more than welcome. It is free, but participants should still register (see below). The Research Axis 2 meeting at the end, however, is limited to those involved in the axis or interested in becoming involved with it.
The event is in-person only.
Attendees will be provided with a light lunch at the beginning of the event, as well as refreshments during two brief coffee breaks.
Registration
Please use this MS form to sign up for the workshop. Registration is permitted up until the day of the event, but it may not be possible to provide lunch to those who register later than March 10.
