Description
The spatialization of sound is an important component of today’s compositions, with a growing use of amplification in concert music. In mixed works, where acoustic instruments and electronics compliment each other, the localization of both instruments/voices and loudspeakers need to be carefully addressed, in order to achieve a good blending or, to the contrary, to allow for a clear discrimination of sound sources.
The workshop will take place in the Multimedia Room of the Schulich School of Music. Conceived to be very interactive, it will be based on an ongoing research-creation project of Sixtrum percussion ensemble and three Canadian composers: Robert Normandeau, Serge Provost and Laurie Radford. Excerpts of their new pieces will be presented and different possibilities of sound spatialization will be demonstrated and discussed. Composer John MacCallum will also present some of his research-creation projects involving percussion and electronics.
