Professor Stephen McAdams, Canada Research Chair in Music Perception and Cognition, is one of six outstanding Canadian researchers to be awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Killam Research Fellowship. He is the second Killam Research Fellowship recipient from the Schulich School of Music.
The Killam Fellowships, made possible by a bequest of Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam, support scholars engaged in research projects of outstanding merit in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary studies within these fields. They include a two-year release from teaching and administrative duties, valued at $70,000 per year.
During this period, Professor McAdams will continue the orchestration and perception research underway in his laboratory at McGill, which spans the arts, sciences and humanities. This project is the first to focus on the relations among the perceptual properties of musical timbre and the principles of auditory perceptual organization, as well as the structuring, expressive, and affective properties of timbre as used by composers. Once complete, he will publish his research findings in the form of a book and pedagogical website.
Recipients of the Fellowship and the Killam Prize were announced on April 18th.
